Belle Isle Nature Center - Honey Bee Hive

Common honeybee

Apis mellifera

There is one queen bee who lays all of the eggs that grow into bees in the hive. Bees communicate with each other through smells and dancing. They can tell other bees where flowers are located by walking in a pattern and wiggling their bodies. Bees can see ultraviolet (UV) light. UV patterns help bees find and recognize flowers.
