Soft-shell Turtle - Belle Isle Nature Zoo

Spiny softshelled turtle

Apalone spinifera

The shell is olive-green, rounded, flat, soft and pancake looking. The male turtle’s shell has small spots and circles called ocelli, and it feels almost like sand paper. The female turtle is larger than the male, has a blotchy camouflage pattern and small spines along the front edge of the shell. The most obvious characteristic is the turtle’s pig-like snout.
