When surprised while basking in the sun, spotted turtles will dive underwater and completely bury themselves in the bottom of mud.

Animal Facts

Diet

Algae, aquatic plants, worms, mollusks, crustaceans, insects, amphibian eggs and carrion.
Habitat

Bogs, marshes, swamps, ponds and woodland streams.
Interesting Facts

Spotted turtles are listed as a threatened species in Michigan because of the draining of ponds and wetlands. These turtles are also exploited by reptile collectors. During the hot summer months, spotted turtles will spend a lot of time buried in the mud.
